Verify Dashboard
IBM Security Verify Users had outgrown their dashboard
Through an interactive usability test, dubbed the Build Your Own Dashboard, we worked with our users to identify what’s most useful to them.
Problem
Our core user, Scott, is an IT Administrator interested in providing a secure verification experience for his end-user.
Our current dashboard does not give users a robust enough window into the status and activity of Verify resources and users
It doesn’t cater to all of our personas, like our non-IT Admin users or non-SSO customers.
Jacob, our line of business owners persona, can’t easily see the value that Verify is providing to justify the business cost.
Research & Assumptions
The Dashboard is the first experience our users see when they log into IBM Security Verify
Shelley Dignum, UX Design Lead, Irena Martinez, UX researcher, and I, along with our stakeholders and PMs worked together to identify what we thought would bring the most value to our users.
The Dashboard is the first experience our users see when they log into IBM Security Verify. After identifying what our assumptions were, I created 40+ low-fi data visualization widgets and organized them onto a Mural (a digital whiteboard for visual collaboration). Our idea was to create a BYOD (Build your own Dashboard) interactive usability test with both current users, and user’s who use a competitive product.
In this exercise, test users are given a mural with the 40+ widgets, which were categorized into relevant sections for our users (Authentication, Consumer Identity Access Management, Users and Applications, etc.) and were asked to mark which widgets they deemed a necessity, nice to have or unhelpful.
With a commitment to creating consistent experiences throughout our portfolio, we identified an opportunity to leverage the existing documentation for other products within Security and elevate the visual aesthetic.
Brand expression
An opportunity to bring to life the IBM Brand within the Get Started Banner for IBM Security Verify.
Before I became the sole illustrator on a team of 120 designers for IBM Security, this was my first attempt at creating on-brand illustrations.
User testing
Build your own Dashboard
What is it?
We placed the 40+ Mid-fi Widgets we created based on a hypothesis of what would be most valuable to our customers, and invited our valued customers to tell us which ones worked best for them, which ones were unnecessary, or gauge what would be better.
This was a great relationship-building opportunity with our valued customers, providing a valuable insight into what they would like to see and how they would like to interact with the Verify product.
In the first half of the user testing, we asked participants to rate which widgets were most valuable, and in the second half, we reviewed a prototype. We learned that while the current dashboard provides essential information for our users, being able to customize and add these widgets would be beneficial.
